Keep the original background for US passport photos

The State Department does not accept a photo with a changed background. For this document the tool crops to 51 × 51 mm and leaves the background alone.

Check the rules for your document

Official document presets show the published dimensions. General crop presets only set the output size; follow the receiving institution’s instructions. A head-height range appears only when one is specified. Guides are framing aids, not an acceptance check.

Some offices do not take every photo:

  • United States: the State Department does not accept photos edited with software, apps or AI. That includes a changed background, so the US passport option only crops.
  • United Kingdom: GOV.UK prohibits edited photos and cutting down a larger picture. Use an approved photo service or the official digital application; UK passport preparation is not offered here.
  • Germany: passports and ID cards need a digital photo taken on certified equipment since 1 May 2025. Printed photos are not accepted.
  • Mexico and Brazil: passports are photographed at the issuing office (SRE, Federal Police).
  • South Korea: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs prohibits white backgrounds removed or composited with software.

Rules change. Read the page of the office that issues your document before you submit.

What the tool does

  • Offers background colors for general crop presets. Official document presets keep the original background.
  • Lays out a 10 × 15 cm, L-size (89 × 127 mm) or A4 sheet with cut lines.
  • Does not retouch the face, change clothes or keep any photo.
  • Is not an official service and is not connected to any government.

Questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is processed in your browser and stays on your device. The site counts page views and downloads, never the photo.

What size is a passport photo?

It depends on the country. It is 51 × 51 mm for the United States, 35 × 45 mm for the United Kingdom and 35 × 45 mm for Japan. Available presets show their dimensions and scope. The UK passport size is reference information; UK preparation is not offered.

Can I use a photo with a changed background for a US passport?

No. The State Department does not accept photos edited with software, apps or AI, including a changed background. Take the photo against a plain white or off-white wall and use the tool only to crop.

How many photos fit on a 10 × 15 cm sheet?

It depends on the size. A 10 × 15 cm sheet takes 6 photos of 35 × 45 mm or 2 photos of 51 × 51 mm. The tool shows the number for your document.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in current Safari and Chrome. The first time, the browser downloads the background remover (34 MB) and keeps it for next time. If the page reloads on its own, the phone ran out of memory: try a smaller photo.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on photos. If you want to support the site, the footer has a Buy me a coffee link.
